What are 4D Scans and how are the images produced?

3D scans are still pictures of the baby in three dimensions, whereas 4D scans are moving 3D images of the baby.  The images show the outside of the baby rather than the more familiar 2D images which show an outline of the baby with the internal organs visible.

3D and 4D scans use exactly the same scanning technology as traditional 2D ultrasound scans but rather than taking a single image, they comprise multiple images processed very quickly in a powerful computer to create the 3D image.
